Sergei Yefimovich Zakharov was born November 26, 1900 in the town of Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky located on Sakhalin Island near the Tatar Strait on the western shores of Northern Sakhalin at the foot of the Western Sakhalin Mountains.
He left some of the Cossacks on his way in order to set up the forts in Krasnovodsk and Alexandrovsk.
The expedition set out from Alexandrovsk on August 28, 1912 in the gunvessel Svyataya Anna, so late in the summer that in October the ship became locked in the polar ice of the Kara Sea off the Yamal Peninsula.
