They were his earliest compositions and appeared in Aunt Judy's Magazine, edited first by his mother, then by his sister.

His best known works are the illustrations he did for the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition (1911) and his portraits of Pope Leo XIII, Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty and Prince Arthur of Connaught.
In 1916 O'Neil married Alfred Hickman (né Alfred Scott Devereaux-Hickman), a British-born film actor who was previously married to actress Blanche Walsh.
