A joint Afghan and British commission was appointed to demarcate the boundary between the two countries, from Nawa Kila, where Sir Richard Udny left off in 1895, to the Peiwar, where Mr. Donald began on the Kurram side.

It is made up of two valleys, draining from the southwest into the Kurram and northeast into the Kohat Tai.

The Orakzais are usually considered to be divided into seven main clans: the Akhel, Ismailzai, Lashkarzai, Massuzai, Daulatzai, Muhammad Khel, Zemasht and Sturi Khel (or Alizai).
The confederation's five tribes are generally given as the Alizai, Ishakzai, Noorzai, Maku, and Khogyani(Khakwani).
