Initially just a small granite longhouse from the around the 14th century, in 1892 it was completely rebuilt in the Neogothic style.

In addition to expanding the museum significantly, Sandvig also travelled extensively to promote ethnological museums, including Vesterheim in Decorah, Iowa.
With a population of 657 (1 January 2013), it is located on a crossroads 13 km north-east of Rønne, 7 km east of Hasle and 12 km south of Allinge.
