He had his first drawing published in the story paper The Captain in 1900, and over the next ten years drew for story papers and comics including Marvel, Pluck, the Boy's Friend, Boy's Herald, Boy's Leader, Illustrated Chips, Comic Cuts, Jester, Big Budget, and Ally Sloper's Half Holiday.

Attempts after the war to revive Sloper proved short-lived, as Sloper was a somewhat stereotypical Victorian and Edwardian type, and did not fit into the new post-war world.
The awards were named after Ally Sloper, the nineteenth century British comic character championed by Gifford as the world's first comic character.
