It became their only release to chart, reaching #37 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart, partly on the strength of the single "Need You Around" which reached #35 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
The song was released in late 2002, and remains the Vines' highest charting single (#7 Billboard Modern Rock, #24 UK Singles Chart).
The song did not perform particularly well as a single, failing to chart on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, where their previous single, "Cut Your Hair", peaked at #10.
Return of the Rentals was well received by critics and produced the successful single "Friends of P." which peaked at number 7 on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart and received significant airplay on MTV's 120 Minutes.
After spending 15 weeks on the Alternative Songs chart, it replaced "Tighten Up" by The Black Keys at number 1, giving the band their tenth number 1 song on the chart.
The slogan used to be :"NO RAP, no hard stuff, and no sleepy elevator music. Just the best songs on the radio. Y100..." There were some alternative songs at the time, but the playlist was overshadowed by many other songs from Ace of Base, U2, Stereo MCs ("Connected"), and Haddaway ("What Is Love").
