Aquilonites is found in the Tournaisian age Kugutyk Formation in Orenburg, Russian Federation 3, in what can be called the Dombarovskii ammonites, associated with species of Gattendoria, Goniocyclus, Muensteroceras, and Eocantites.
They were collected from the "Couches à Poissons et Ammonites" Member of the Middle Sakamena Formation at the only currently known amniote locality of the Diego Basin, Antsiranana of northwestern Madagascar, dating to the Induan stage of the early Early Triassic period.
His more detailed researches related to the Jurassic and Cretaceous Ammonites and to the Tertiary freshwater mollusca; and in these studies he sought to trace the descent of the species.
Marine fossils (bivalves and ammonites) may be found within some of the limestone beds.
In association with the names of geologists grouped in the area, it was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) after Leonard Frank Spath (1882–1957), a British paleontologist and stratigrapher whose study of ammonites made possible the correlation of Mesozoic rocks.
