It is named after the Portuguese naturalist and explorer José Alberto de Oliveira Anchieta.

This species is preyed upon by birds of prey, especially snake eagles and secretary birds.
It is Zambia's only endemic bird and appears on the new 1 kwacha coin.

He gives his name to two cities, Anchieta, in the State of Espírito Santo (formerly called Reritiba, his place of death), and Anchieta, in the state of Santa Catarina, and many other places, roads, institutions, hospitals, and schools.

Although longer than Anchieta, Rodovia dos Imigrantes is nowadays busier due to its building standards, which permit higher speed limits, and its more direct path to the cities of Santos and Guarujá, the northern coast (with Bertioga), as well as the southern coast (with cities Praia Grande, Mongaguá, and Itanhaém.
