The product was created in 1971 by Goodmark Foods, Inc., which licensed the name and likeness of the comic strip character Andy Capp from Creators Syndicate.
With no substitutes allowed, Fell replaced Williams between the sticks and performed so heroically in the 3–3 draw that The Daily Mirror presented him with an 'Andy Capp' award.
He was nicknamed Zé do Boné (the Portuguese name of comic strip character Andy Capp) since, like the character, he usually wore a flat cap.

His credits, many with lifelong friend and collaborator Willis Hall, include satires such as That Was The Week That Was, BBC-3 and The Frost Report during the 1960s, the book for the 1975 musical The Card, Budgie, Worzel Gummidge, and Andy Capp (an adaptation of the comic strip).
In 1982 an Andy Capp musical was produced, starring Tom Courtenay with music by Alan Price, first in Manchester, later in London, and then to great success in Finland.
