Djokaj played for FK Dečić, FK Budućnost Podgorica, FK Mladost Podgorica, Mallorca, Lleida, Obilić, OFK Beograd, Red Star Belgrade, Trabzonspor, Ankaraspor, TuS Koblenz and TSV 1860 München before returning to Montenegro to his former club Budućnost.
On 6 July 2006 the club adopted the name Berlin Ankaraspor Kulübü 07 and selected Ahmet Gökcek, son of the mayor of Ankara, as chairman.
He took his Turkish name after Melih Gökçek, the mayor of Ankara and the honorary president of Ankaraspor.
On June 14 Ilhan was transferred to Ankaraspor along with Özgür Çek and 4.2 milyon Euros in return for Özer Hurmacı.
However, on 25 July 2007, club manager Karl-Heinz Feldkamp officially reported to the board he was not planning to use the player in the upcoming season, which resulted in a transfer list; he split (always on loan) the campaign between Ankaraspor and Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor, netting 11 goals in total.
However, he did not make any league appearances for the club, and was later sent to Ankaraspor as part of the deal that brought Özer Hurmacı to Fenerbahçe.
A somewhat religious man, rumors were started that a league match between Sivasspor and Ankaraspor, was postponed during the 2006–07 on account of it coinciding with Yom Kippur.
