On 26 May 2009 it was pronounced at an arrangement at the Ibsen Museum in Oslo by the leader of the committee, actress Liv Ullmann, that Ariane Mnouchkine was this year's winner of the International Ibsen Award.

Amongst the artists who have appeared at the festival are Ariane Mnouchkine, Peter Brook, Bill Viola, Patrice Chéreau, Ilya Kabakov, Peter Sellars, Christian Boltanski, Bill Frisell, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, Akram Khan (dancer), Cecilia Bartoli and Thomas Hampson.
Zaryan has also interned and taken graduate courses with Ariane Mnouchkine, Carolyn Carlson and Maurice Béjart.
