The first ever winner was Sweden's Arja Saijonmaa with "Högt över havet", which originally came second in the Swedish national final, Melodifestivalen 1987.
The contest was held in Östersund in Sweden after OGAE Sweden won the 1987 contest with "Högt över havet" by Arja Saijonmaa.
