Following his graduation from the Armed Forces Staff College in 1968, he commanded the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
General Amos graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia and the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
He has served as a cutter and patrol boat commander and is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College.
He was a student at the Armed Forces Staff College in 1950–51 and was subsequently assigned to the Submarine School at New London, Connecticut, initially as an instructor and, in 1952–53, as the Officer in Charge.
He is also a graduate of the United States Army Infantry School Fort Benning, Georgia, Ghana Armed Forces Staff College and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic studies, Kuru.
Kinnan’s military education includes the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado (Class of 1970); Distinguished Graduate Air Force Squadron Officers School in 1974, Air Command and Staff College in 1976, Armed Forces Staff College in 1981, Distinguished Graduate National War College in 1990, Joint Force Air Component Commander Course in 1995 and Joint Flag Officer Warfighting Course in 1997.
After completing the Armed Forces Staff College in September 1967, he moved to Southeast Asia as flight commander and operations officer with the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand.
