Shells were already being filled and armed at Leeds Forge Company, based at Armley, which by August 1915 was filling 10,000 shells per week.
Together with his fellow members of Chimp Eats Banana, Midge and Danbert Nobacon, he moved to Leeds in 1981 and studied at the University of Leeds, dropping out after a year before moving into the South View House squat in Armley.

The areas decline began in the early 20th century when Leeds' industry moved away from the centre out towards Hunslet, Holbeck, Armley and Kirkstall.
