In 1863 Lt. Colonel Hodges was made the Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Cumberland, reporting to Major General Rosecrans, and participating in the Battle of Chickamauga from September 19 – 20, 1863.

It was assigned to front-line combat duty in the Army of the Cumberland in the Western Theater and participated in most of its leading battles and campaigns, including the Chattanooga Campaign and the 1864 Atlanta Campaign.
In 1863, La Grange became a brigade commander in the Army of the Cumberland under the command of future U.S. Representative William Rosecrans.
