In the late 1830s, the territory comprising the river's drainage area was the scene of the Aroostook War, a boundary dispute between the United States and the United Kingdom.
The town is situated next to the Aroostook River and three of its permanent river islands; Crouse Island, Churchill Island and Bull Island.
It moved south taking in parts of Victoria County north of the Aroostook River and north taking in the areas around and including the Town of St-Leonard.
