Arun Majumdar, former deputy director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, was appointed the first director of ARPA-E in September 2009, over six months after the organization was first funded.

Canal tunnel

The term "canal tunnel" does not seem to be commonly applied to tunnels used to conduct water (for irrigation, water supply, etc.), such as the 48 km long Arpa-Sevan tunnel in Armenia (see List of longest tunnels in the world), or a number of tunnels on the Irtysh–Karamay–Ürümqi Canal in China.
