This property gave the name to this chemical, after Ascaris – a genus of the large intestinal roundworms.
It was described again in 1883, at the level of chromosomes, by Van Beneden in Ascaris eggs.

The genus Wedlia (Cobbold 1860) is named after him, as are the species Didymosulcus wedli (Ariola, 1902), Ascaris wedli (Stossich, 1896) and Paroneirodes wedli (Pietschmann 1926).
