Astacins are a family of digestive enzymes, discovered in the 1990s, which were first isolated from Astacus astacus.
Fishing also contributes to the community; the many nearby lakes and ponds are rich in Pike (Esocidae), Crayfish (Astacus astacus) and Eel (Anguilla anguilla).
European crayfish was observed in 1989 and Signal crayfish, illegally introduced during the 1990s, is feared to threaten the population of Stone Loach and to bring crayfish plague into the stream.
