The new agency, by mandate of an Apostolic Letter, is charged with monitoring the monetary and commercial activities of Vatican agencies, such as the Governorate of Vatican City State, the Vatican Bank, the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and smaller agencies such as the Vatican Pharmacy, the Vatican Supermarket, and the Vatican Museums.

On Thursday, January 30, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his resignation as President of the Executive Board of the Financial Information Authority, and named Bishop Giorgio Corbellini, Titular Bishop of Abula, and President of the Labour Office of the Apostolic See and the Disciplinary Commission of the Roman Rota, to immediately succeed him as Interim President of the Executive Board of the Authority.

On 30 January 2014, Pope Francis accepted the request of Cardinal Attilio Nicora to be relieved of his duties as President of the Financial Information Authority (AIF), and Bishop Corbellini was named interim President, along with his other duties.
