The by-election was held because the incumbent MP of the Liberal Party, Edward Sullivan, became Attorney General for Ireland.
Sir Thomas Snagge (1536–1593) was a Member of Parliament, barrister and landowner who served as Speaker of the English House of Commons, Attorney General for Ireland and as Queen's Sergeant.
He was appointed Attorney General for Ireland in 1532, and second justice of KIng's Bench in 1535; he was also Chief Remembrancer of the Exchequer.
His uncle was William Saurin, attorney-general for Ireland, and was partly of French extraction.
