Auckland representative sides traditionally wear a blue jersey with a white double 'V', in the same style of the New Zealand Kiwis jersey but with blue instead of black, this is still the jersey worn by the Auckland Vulcans NSW Cup team.

In 1954, while playing for Auckland against Great Britain, he ruptured his spleen when tackled illegally by Doug Greenall.
He was picked to play for the Lion Red XIII against a Tongan Residents side and also represented Auckland in its Rugby League Cup challenge.
Cowan represented Auckland and the New Zealand Māori side before being selected to play for the New Zealand Kiwis in 1984.
In 2011 Matagi was named in the Auckland Rugby League team of the year and went on to be named man of the match in the National Competition final.
