The town was originally named Odingehem, 'home of Odin', by the Vikings who built a temple here dedicated to the Germanic god Odin.
One of the casements of the Todt Battery can be visited at the Musée du Mur de l'Atlantique, the Atlantic Wall Museum, at Audinghen.
A second surviving gun can be seen at the Batterie Todt museum, near Audinghen in northern France.
