He started his teaching career as an instructor at Augsburg College in Minneapolis and McGill University in Montreal before moving to the Western Michigan University Department of Comparative Religion where he taught Islamic Studies from 1970 to 2008 and served as departement head at the time of his death in 2008.
Among his commissioned hymns are those for Presbyterian Heritage Sunday (Praise God for Days Long Past), Augsburg College, Goshen College, Maryville College, Tusculum College, Wilson College and Knox College, University of Toronto, American University, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Lancaster Theological Seminary, the 250th anniversary of the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Peachtree Presbyterian Church and the Lutheran World Federation.
Augsburg Theological Seminary, founded in 1869 at Marshall, Wisconsin, later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and ultimately the seminary of the Lutheran Free Church.
