Like Futrelle's other short stories, "The Problem of Cell 13" features Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen as the main character, although most of the story is seen through the perspective of a prison warden.


George W. Van Dusen

Van Dusen was from a New York family, and his father Laurence had been born in Byron Center, Genesee County, New York.

In 1888, Van Dusen was president and general manager of both his eponymous company, then in control of more than 90 elevators stretching from Winona to Pierre, South Dakota, and the Star Eleveator Company.

H.V. Van Dusen

Van Dusen died in January 1903, and funeral services were held in the Church of the Nazarene on South Los Angeles Street with the Rev. P.F. Bresee officiating and East Side Lodge 35 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in charge of the ceremony.

Harrington Mansion and Events Center

Shortly after, Harrington switched to the grain business and later partnered with George Van Dusen in 1889 to establish the Van Dusen-Harrington Company, a grain processing and distribution firm.
