The Aurignacian settlement site at Breitenbach in Saxony-Anhalt is discovered by local schoolteacher E. Thiersch.
In Wales, at Ffynnon Beuno Cave, Tremeirchion, Denbighshire, the cave complex is excavated: occupational evidence includes Aurignacian and proto-Solutrean flint work plus Pleistocene fauna (Palaeolithic, Old Stone Age).
Aurignac is best known for the 1860 discovery, by Édouard Lartet, of prehistoric remains in nearby caves, at the Abri préhistorique d'Aurignac, which led to the definition of the Aurignacian culture.
The flint tools found in association with the remains at the first Cro-Magnon site have associations with the Aurignacian culture that Lartet had identified a few years before he found the skeletons.
