In 584, they elected Duke Authari and ceded him not only the capital of Pavia, but half of their ducal domains as a demesne.

When Authari died in Pavia in 590, possibly by poison, he was succeeded as king by Agilulf, duke of Turin, on the advice, sought by the dukes, of Theodelinda, who married the new king.
In May 591, Authari's successor, Agilulf, sent Agnellus, Bishop of Trent, to the Frankish court of Brunhilda to secure the ransom of several Tridentine prisoners captured in the previous war, which he did.
There Theudelinda married Authari in May, and Gundoald was invested with the duchy of Asti and the hand of a granddaughter of King Wacho in marriage.
