Gumbert built a nunnery for his wife and her maidens at Avenay, and retired himself to a monastery on the coast, where he was soon afterwards put to death by pagan marauders.
Karl Keck was killed in action near Avenay on the Western Front on the 11 July 1944, and awarded a posthumous Knight's Cross for his actions in June 1944.
After her betrothal, Marie was sent to the abbey of Avenay in Champagne for her education.
