Ashtamudi Estuary has mangroves Avicennia officinalis, Brugiera gymnorrhiza and Sonneratia caseolaris as also 43 species of marshy and mangrove associates including two endangered species Syzygium travancoricum (endangered species according to the Red Data Book of Indian Plants) and Calamus rotang in the Terrestrial system.
However, on hard surfaces such as the branches of Avicennia and the aerial prop roots of Rhizophora, it is more domed and the animal orientates itself with regard to the water current and the axis of the wood.
Among the plants that grow in this park are Avicennia, Dryobalanops and Pandanus species, Alstonia scholaris, Terminalia catappa, Shorea selanica, Octomeles sumatrana, Bruguiera sexangula, Melaleuca leucadendra, Pometia pinnata, Rhizophora acuminata and various species of orchid.

Avicennia alba is a fast growing species and is sometimes planted, along with Sonneratia and Rhizophora, to help prevent coastal erosion.
Other fox squirrels in Florida include the Southern fox squirrel (S. n. niger), which lives in a wide area of the panhandle, and the mangrove fox squirrel (S. n. avicennia), which lives southwest of Lake Okeechobee.
