As a result of studies in Rome in 1894 and 1895, he wrote De Avignonske Pavers Forhold til Danmark (1896), concerning the relationship between the Avignon Papacy and Denmark, for which he obtained the doctorate.
Luis de la Cerda, then serving as a French ambassador to the papal court in Avignon, submitted a proposal to Pope Clement VI that offered the Catholic Church the more palatable vision of conquering the islands and converting the native Guanches to Christianity.
From 1415 to 1423 it was the home of the schismatic Avignon pope Benedict XIII (Pedro de Luna), whose name is commemorated in the Bufador de Papa Luna, a curious cavern with a landward entrance through which the seawater escapes in clouds of spray.
