It is generally realistic in tone, marked by occasional bursts of surrealism and absurdity, such as Osaka imagining Chiyo's ponytails being "unscrewed" from her head and an episode featuring the characters' New Year's dreams.
In the anime Azumanga Daioh, one of the characters rapidly says "Ukoncha" in an effort to make it sound like "Unkocha," or "Poo-Tea"
She is also a notable musical composer, having written music for several anime series, most prominent being .hack//Legend of the Twilight, Azumanga Daioh (where one of her bands, Oranges & Lemons, also performs both theme songs), and Brigadoon.
