When he launched the Colombo-Matara Ruhunu Kumari train service, in October 1955, it was Rampala himself who drove the train from Colombo to Matara.
In the 1950s, the route was upgraded to support broad-gauged operation, under the administration of then CGR General Manager B. D. Rampala.
