On the invitation of B. V. Doshi, in 1971 he resigned from his tenured post at Harvard and shifted to Ahmedabad, India as a Ford Foundation Advisor to the Ahmedabad Educational Society, where he founded the School of Planning.

Institute of Management Development and Research (IMDR) was founded by Dr R. T. Doshi and Shri Sumatilal Shah in 1974, as a constituent unit of the Deccan Education Society.
He commissioned world-renowned architects such as Louis Kahn, Le Corbusier, B. V. Doshi and Charles Correa to design some of these institutes and bring modern architecture in Ahmedabad.
