It was an exercise in political orientation in Nigeria undertaken by President Babangida as one of the recommendations of the Political Bureau headed by Samuel Cookey.
Haruna Babangida (born 1 October 1982 in Kaduna) is a Nigerian footballer who last played for Austrian First League side Kapfenberger SV.
He was appointed FEDECO chairman in 1989 after his predecessor (and former mentor) Eme Awa resigned due to a disagreement with Ibrahim Babangida.
January 4, 1993 saw the announcement by Babangida of a National Defense and Security Council, of which Babangida himself was to be President, while in April 1993 the SDP nominated Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO) as its presidential candidate, with the National Republican Convention (NRC) choosing Bashir Tofa to run for the same position.

On April 22, 1990, Babangida's government was almost toppled by a coup attempt led by Major Gideon Orkar.
The plotters led by the late Major Gideon Orkar had attempted to overrun the then seat of the Federal Government; Dodan Barracks, and in that process killing Babangida’s Aide de Camp, Major U.K.Bello.
