Badwater Basin, Death Valley, California; the USA's point of lowest elevation

Badwater Ultramarathon, run between the basin and the slopes of Mount Whitney

Ferg Hawke

The Badwater Ultramarathon is a 135-mile (217 km) ultramarathon through Death Valley in mid-July, starting at Badwater Basin, the second-lowest point in the Western Hemisphere, 282 feet below sea level, and finishing 8300 feet up Mount Whitney.

Marshall Ulrich

Arguably most famous for his exploits in the Badwater Ultramarathon across Death Valley, Ulrich has finished the race 18 times and crossed Death Valley a record 24 times, including a 586-mile 'Badwater Quad,' covering the course four times (twice up and back), and a self-contained, unaided solo, in which he pulled all supplies (food, ice, medical) in a cart that weighed more than 200 pounds at the start.

Richard Benyo

In 1989, Benyo and his running partner, Tom Crawford, became the first to complete the run from Badwater in Death Valley (the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere and one of the hottest places on Earth), to the peak of Mt. Whitney (at 14,494 feet highest point in the contiguous United States) and back, a total distance of 300 miles.
