The first known members of the family, Ioane and his son, Abuser, served loyally to King Bagrat IV (reigned 1027-1072) as hereditary holders of Artanuji (in Klarjeti) and Khikhata (in Adjara).
The couple had a son, Demetre, who played a notable role in the civil unrest of Georgia during the reign of his half-brother Bagrat IV.
It resulted in a decisive defeat of the army of King Bagrat IV by the rebel feudal lord Liparit IV, Duke of Kldekari.
Of particular note is the apical enamel of a royal pair whom a Greek inscription identifies as the Byzantine emperor Michael VII Doukas and his Georgian consort Maria, daughter of Bagrat IV of Georgia, both of whom is represented as crowning.
