According to Balázs Orbán, it was founded during the reign of László I as a community of border guards for the defense of the Ghimeṣ pass, on the eastern border of the Kingdom of Hungary.
In the first volume of A Székelyöfld leírása (Description of the Szeklerland) from 1868, Balázs Orbán writes about genesis legend of Udvarhelyszék, which seems to mirror that by this time kürtőskalács was already strongly imprinted in the common knowledge of the region.
A 1500 m long cave was named after the geographer of the Székely Land Balázs Orbán.
