According to Sister Cities International, Bamyan has established a sister city relationship with Gering, Nebraska, United States.
The paper identified a need for funds to hire new chief editors, sub-editors and journalists in the Afghan provinces of Herat, Kandahar, Ghazni, Bamian, Parwan, Kunduz, Jalalabad and Khost.
The Buddhist remains at Bamyan were included on the 2008 World Monuments Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites by the World Monuments Fund.

In 1709, when the Hotaki dynasty rose to power in Kandahar and defeated the Persian Safavids, Bamyan was under the Mughal Empire until Ahmad Shah Durrani made it become part of his new Durrani Empire, which became to what is now the modern state of Afghanistan.
He then spent six months in Bamyan, in the remote mountains of Central Afghanistan, working on the Afghan Parliamentary Elections in 2005.
Maidan Wardak province is located in the Central (or Central East) region of Afghanistan; bordering Parwan to the Northeast, Kabul and Logar to the east, Ghazni to the south and Bamyan to the west.
He rose rapidly in the ranks, becoming a sub-commander of a Waziri Taliban unit, and fighting in battles against the Northern Alliance forces of Ahmad Shah Massoud in Bagram, Bamyan and Panjshir.
