Bargoed is regularly namechecked during televised snooker tournaments as Mark Williams, Embassy World Snooker Champion in 2000 and 2003, practises his sport at the town's Emporium Snooker Hall.

David Probert, British flat racing Champion Apprentice jockey 2008, attended Ysgol Gymraeg Gilfach Fargoed also attended Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, which was located in Bargoed and Aberbargoed until 2002, where a new building was constructed at Fleur de Lys.

The colliery, which was the subject of a painting by L. S. Lowry, closed during the 1980s, and its former site is now a country park.
