It takes its name from the name of a manor in the parish of Barham in Kent, England that was named after the broom plant.
Students come from Kerang and the surrounding towns of Koondrook, Quambatook, Boort, Lake Charm, Murrabit, Pyramid Hill and Macorna as well as Barham in New South Wales.

To the west of the village is a hill that extends down to the villages of Claydon and Barham situated in the Gipping Valley.
In 1826 Barham first contributed to Blackwood's Magazine; and in 1837 he began to furnish to a recently-initiated magazine, Bentley's Miscellany, the series of tales (most of them metrical, some in prose) known as The Ingoldsby Legends.
