The Barmah National Park is on the floodplain of the Murray River, and when it floods is an important breeding ground for Murray cod.
The site was identified as an IBA because it supports Australasian Bitterns, Superb Parrots, Flame Robins and Diamond Firetails, as well as large numbers of breeding waterbirds when flooded.
Following this removal, Patten was located by his father and the pair fled from New South Wales, to the safety of Barmah in Victoria.
