The Debenham Islands were discovered and named by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) (1934–37) under John Riddoch Rymill; the BGLE base was on Barry Island, in the center of the group, during part of this time.
Born in Bristol on 3 September 1904, Frederick William James Whitlow's family eventually moved to Barry and made a home on Barry Island.
Portheiddy Moor lies on the sloping southern side of the valley separating Barry Island from the mainland.

The road then enters the Barry district of Palmerstown along Cardiff Road and goes into Weston Square, Gladstone Road, Broad Street, Harbour Road and finally Friars Road in Barry Island.
Some parts of the line, particularly around the Plymouth Road/Barry Island area, were used for several scenes in the Doctor Who episodes "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" in January 2005.
