The legend of the saint relates that in about the year 60 Saint Peter passed through and put Bassus at the head of the nascent bishopric.
Local tradition traces the origin of the bishopric of Lucera to the third century and Saint Bassus.
The Slovene name is derived from šent Pas, referring to either Saint Bassus of Lucera or Saint Bassus of Nice, to whom the parish church was formerly dedicated.
