The engagement mentioned in verse two is the Battle of Abu Klea in Sudan in January 1885 during the unsuccessful expedition to rescue General Gordon.
In the fighting in the desert between Bayuda-Kurti and Metemmeh (on the Nile opposite Shendi) the Madhist Sudanese suffered a defeat in the Battle of Abu Klea soon after the base at Korti was built.
His great-grandson, the 4th Viscount, was part of the force that was sent in 1884 to rescue General Gordon at Khartoum, and died from wounds received at the Battle of Abu Klea in January 1885.
