It was the location of the 1303 Battle of Marj al-Saffar, and the childhood home of Adnan Awad.
In February 2007, another Deputy Health Minister, Hakim al-Zamili, and General Hamid al-Shammari, were both arrested on suspicion they had played a role in Saffar and others' kidnappings.
During one of these campaigns, Chupan's army, under the command of Ghazan's chief military officer Qutlugh Shah, was defeated by the Mamelukes in the battle of Marj al-Saffar (1303).
In Iranian folklore, Ya'qub is sometimes regarded as an Iranian Robin Hood because according to legend he stole from the wealthy and helped the poor.
