Battle of Vigo Bay, which took place in 1702 as part of the War of the Spanish Successcion
After the accession of Queen Anne in March 1702, he became commander of the land forces co-operating with Sir George Rooke in Spain, where he fought in the Battle of Cádiz in August 1702 and the Battle of Vigo Bay in October 1702 during the War of the Spanish Succession.
Seeing the fleet passing offshore he literally ran away to sea, down Puckaster Lane and into a rowing boat, later distinguishing himself, especially at the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702 and returning to beecome a local Member of Parliament.
Its name comes from the public house situated on the main road, which commemorates the Battle of Vigo Bay, a sea battle during the War of the Spanish Succession.

The Strait of Rande, where the Rande Bridge now connects Moaña with the municipality of Redondela, was the scene of the Battle of Vigo Bay (or Battle of Rande).
