His left leg was amputated below the knee as a result of being wounded in the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862.
On May 5, 1862, Hartshorn was killed during the Battle of Williamsburg in Virginia, becoming the second Lyndeborough resident to die in the Civil War.
