This quarry was host to a number of locomotive parts including the frame of V 132, which had been retrofitted with Walschaerts valve gear in 1898 as an experiment by NZR.
It is on the northern approach to the pass, a saddle between the Otira and Bealey Rivers high in the Southern Alps.
Bealey Avenue in Christchurch, the Bealey River and the settlement of Bealey in Canterbury are named for him.
