Bechuanaland Protectorate

Bechuanaland meant the country of the Tswana and for administrative purposes was divided into two political entities.

Overprinted stamps were issued until 1932, when the first stamps inscribed "Bechuanaland Protectorate" were issued.

It was designated the RR 10th Class and was used on the long section south of Bulawayo in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) through Bechuanaland Protectorate (now Botswana) to Mafeking in the Cape Province.

Cape Province

It was by far the largest of South Africa's four provinces, as it contained regions it had previously annexed, such as British Bechuanaland (not to be confused with the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now Botswana), Griqualand East (the area around Kokstad) and Griqualand West (area around Kimberley).

Jules Ellenberger

Ellenberger held a variety of posts in the Bechuanaland Protectorate, as the equivalent of a district commissioner at Gaberone, Ngamiland, and Mafeking.
