Ernst Casimir married Countess Thekla of Erbach-Fürstenau, fourth eldest daughter of Albrecht, Count of Erbach-Fürstenau and his wife Princess Sophie Emilie Luise of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein-Ingelfingen, on 8 September 1836 in Beerfelden.
He was born in Beerfelden, Germany in 1838, the son of Jacob Hess and Anne Marie Seip, and came to Canada West with his family in 1858, settling in Berlin (later Kitchener, Ontario).
Moses Buttenweiser (1862–1939) was an American Bible scholar, born at Beerfelden, Germany and educated at the universities of University of Würzburg, Leipzig, and Heidelberg.
